Another huge crowd gathered for the Redland Angus “calving ease” yearling bull sale at Buffalo Livestock Auction. Redland Angus is located in Big Horn County, west of Buffalo, Wyoming.

The cover of their catalog says it all, “A ranch’s profit starts with a live calf.” Pictured is a new calf being licked by her mother, just after the calf landed on the Wyoming range. These cattle are low labor, low input cattle that can reduce costs by staying on the range all year long.

The Redlands have bred generations of cattle that are selected for lighter birth weights, moderate frames, and excellent fleshing ability and muscling. These cattle are designed to thrive in a total grass-based range environment. Redlands feel that these cattle will be consistent in their ability to transmit genetics for increased profitability by good range utilization and decreased calving problems.

This was a very fast paced sale that stayed strong until the very end. Many repeat buyers were on the seats to compete for the top end of these bulls.

The top selling bull of the day was Lot 85, selling for $13,000 to the East Fork Ranch from Montana. The Horseshoe I Ranch, also from Montana, chose Lot 32 at $11,000. He was Redland Emblazon 875, a son of OCC Emblazon 854E and out of a daughter of Sitz Alliance 9800. With his 78 pound birth weight, he really grew, posting a weaning weight of 797 pounds. His EPDs were CED 10, BW -0.1, WW 42, MILK 23, and YW 64.

It was another great day for Kendrick and Sharon Redland. They served a tasty brisket sandwich and salads before the sale, followed by delicious chocolate cake at day’s end to celebrate another successful sale.
