Redland Angus, owned by Kendrick and Sharon Redland, hosted another really large crowd for their annual fall production sale. Held at Buffalo Livestock in Buffalo, Wyoming, it seems that this family draws cattlemen from all directions to come and evaluate these cattle. The sun was shining, and the ground was wet as that first dab of snow had arrived and was melting.
”Range Calved and Range Raised’ is the theme for their breeding program, and is truly the center of their ranch production plan. Redlands use the tried and true genetics that made the Angus cow famous on the western range. These cattle are extra deep in their rib and thick down their top. They are designed to produce calves on the range without a whole lot of extra feed or labor.
Many repeat buyers were on hand again, which is a testimony to this program, and the way that the customers are treated by the Redlands. All bulls have been PAP tested, to assure their well-being at higher elevations.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 54, a summer yearling bull, sired by OCC Emblazon 854E, and out of a daughter of Redland Forte 323. Born at 75 pounds, he weaned at 625 pounds, and then posted a yearling weight of 1,127 pounds. His PAP score was 40, along with a marbling score of 4.70. His EPDs were CED 6, BW 1.6, WW 35, MILK 18, and YW 63. His new owner is the Bredthauer Ranch in Nebraska at $14,500.
Lot 55 sold to the Tracy Ranch from Wyoming for $13,500. He was sired by Redland Traveler 0930 and out of a daughter of Redland Forte 210. With only a 70 pound birth weight, he weaned at 700 pounds. His PAP score of 35 complimented his EPDs of CED 9, BW 1.1, WW 52, MILK 16, and YW 92.
The Van Dusseldorp Ranch from South Dakota chose Lot 41 at $12,000. This coming two-year-old bull was sired by OCC Paxton and out of a daughter of GDAR Game Day 449. He hit the ground at 69 pounds and grew to a weaning weight of 729 pounds. His marbling score was 4.80, and he posted a rib eye of 13.20 square inches.
Lot 12 also landed in South Dakota with his purchase by Ellsworth Ranch for $11,750. Here was another coming two-year-old bull, sired by OCC Paxton 730P and out of a daughter of Game Day 449. He was born at 75 pounds, weaned at 780 pounds, posted a marbling scored of 5.20, and scanned a 13 square inch rib eye.
At $10,500, Lot 4 also sold to the Van Dusseldorp Ranch. Sired by Redland Emblazon 5437, he was out of a Game Day daughter. With a birth weight of 70 pounds, he had a weaning weight of 786 pounds, and posted a yearling weight of 1258 pounds. His EPDs were CED 10, BW -0.3, WW 36, MILK 22, and YW 71.
Long time repeat buyer, Tim Burch, from Montana, purchased Lot 186 at $10,000. He was by Redland Traveler 0930 3456, and out of a daughter of GDAR Oscar 734. He had a 74 pound birth weight, and a weaning weight of 681 pounds.
The Redlands breed their cows to have small teats with well suspended udders so that cows can calve out on the range with less labor. Ranchers had come to buy these females, and the demand stayed strong for both the bred heifers and the bred cows.
All in all, this was another great sale for Kendrick and Sharon Redland. The brisket lunch was certainly enjoyed by all in attendance.
January is just around the corner, and Redlands will be offering their calving ease yearling bulls on January 21, 2017, again at the Buffalo Livestock Auction Barn.
