It was a beautiful sunny day in Buffalo, South Dakota, for the second annual Smith Saddle Butte Ranch Bull Sale. The bulls were in great shape, fed well, but green enough that you could change their feed ration and still have them be on a steady gain. All bulls were semen tested and guaranteed for one breeding season.
With this sale marking the second annual auction for the SSBR, the crowd size had improved but nearly all bull buyers were repeat customers.
The sale was a family affair with a wonderful hot lunch of chili and desserts being served by family members, and the auctioneering being done by Rebecca’s father, Paul.
The top selling bull was right out the gate with Lot 501 going to Dean and Lori Jenkins for $5,250. 501’s sire was 9Q13 of Rita 5F56 GHM, and out of the great dam EA Miss Emulous 0029, a cow that has posted 3 calves at a wean ratio of 109. Lot 501’s EPD’s were; CED -1, BW +3.2, WW +65, YW +114, SC 39, and his weaning ratio was 120.
Another nice calf was Lot 522 going to Conrad Smith for $3,700. Lot 522 had a WW of +64, and YW +110. Out of SSBR Objective sire.
Alvin Cordell of Camp Crook was the high volume buyer, taking 5 bulls home and averaging $3,500.
I respect the way that Travis and Rebecca showcase their bulls. They bring them to the sale straight from the pasture, the bulls are quiet and easy to be around, and everything is presented with full disclosure, you never have to wonder whether or not you’re getting the full story.
Call Travis anytime to talk about improving your herd and your bottom dollar with bulls that earn their keep on the ranch.
