Van Beek Angus Ranch, owned by Jeff Van Beek, along with his family and longtime herdsmen, Troy and Billie Jo LaFave, hosted a big crowd at their annual production sale at Mobridge Livestock.

This is the first time I have worked this sale, and I would have to say that I was very impressed by this set of cattle. This was a big, stout set of bulls that are bred for growth, maternal, and carcass characteristics. They were long, big-middled cattle that were excellent in their dispositions as you sorted through them in the pens. I thought the bred females were outstanding, especially with their dispositions.

Most of the bulls were AI sired, and 21 head were out of the Van Beek embryo transfer program. The cow herd is deep in daughters and cows from the embryo program.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 2, selling for $13,500 to John Sweeden from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was BBR Duke 5A10, and sired by Deer Valley All In. He was 84 pounds at birth and out of a daughter of Connealy Confidence. He weaned at 775 pounds, before growing to a yearling of 1369 pounds. His EPDs were CED 11, BW 0.2, WW 68, YW 119, MILK 29, MARB 0.43, and RE 0.85.

Todd Goldsmith from Mobridge, South Dakota, chose Lot 3 at $9,000. This son of GAR Prophet was out of a daughter of Werner War Party who was a first calf heifer. He was designed to grow, with EPDs of BW 3.4, WW 81, YW 140, MILK 41, MARB 1.00, and RE 0.85. Born at 90 pounds, he weaned at 917 pounds, and reached a yearling weight of 1519 pounds. He had an IMF of 5.29% to ratio 108 and a rib eye of 14.9 square inches.

Lot 4 sold for $7,250 to Will Kruse from Gary, South Dakota. Here was a son of GAR Prophet who was out of a daughter of Sitz Upside. He entered the world at 82 pounds, weaned at 739 pounds, and posted a yearling weight of 1496 pounds. His EPDs were CED 9, BW 2, WW 76, YW 138, MILK 33, MARB 1.18, and RE 0.58.

At $7,000, the successful bidder for Lot 19 was Glen Hoffman from Long Lake, South Dakota. This bull was an embryo son of Sitz Upside and Blackbird 9901 BCBR, a daughter of GAR Predestined. He had an IMF of 6.41%, and EPDs of CED 8, BW 1.4, WW 58, YW 15, and MILK 34.

Brent Pries from Pierre, South Dakota, purchased Lot 28 at $6,750. He was by Sitz Upside, and out of a daughter of TC Total 410. With an 84-pound birth weight, he weaned at 724 pounds, and attained a yearling weight of 1418 pounds. His EPDs included BW 0.6, WW 61, YW 117, MILK 27, and $Beef $162.90.
