The Weller Ranch from Kadoka, S.D., hosted a really nice crowd for their annual production sale. Bill Weller offers a very stout, free-moving set of virgin two-year-old Angus bulls that work well in western South Dakota. Bill, along with his two sons, Tagg and Gage, produce bulls for the commercial cattlemen. These cattle have muscle and body, and soundness on their feet and legs are a must.

Bill’s parents, W.O. and Jean Weller, held their first sale 35 years ago, and this tradition is working its way into the third generation, with the addition of Bill’s boys.

This was a very active, competitive sale with many repeat buyers on hand. The bred females were very well received, with a lot of interest from the bidders on the seats.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 2, selling for $9,250 to Knippling Land and Cattle, Chamberlain, S.D. This bull was a son of Baldridge Download Z013, and out of a daughter of Canyon 2217 of Rito 6I6. He had EPDs of BW 2.7, WW 62, YW 110, MILK 24, and a scrotal measurement of 40 cm. With an 80 pound birth weight, he weaned at 770 pounds, and posted a November weight of 1,680 pounds.

Lot 1, an embryo transplant, sold to Roger Glynn at $8,500. Sired by Musgrave Foundation, he was out of a daughter of Connealy Lead On. He had a 76 pound birth weight, with a November weight of 1,720 pounds. His EPDs were BW 1.7, WW 62, YW 111, and MILK 31.

Roger Glynn purchased Lot 3 also. Here was another son of Baldridge Download Z013 who was out of a Canyon daughter. His EPDs were BW 1.1, WW 60, YW 101, MILK 23, with a scrotal measurement of 40 cm. His birth weight was only 76 pounds, yet he had a weaning weight of 735 pounds. The final price was 8,250.

Lots 4, 6, 20, and 22 sold for $6,000 each. Their new owners were Knippling Land and Cattle, Chamberlain, S.D., Larry Volmer, Owanka, S.D., Vance Martin, Midland, S.D., and Gene Michael, Philip, S.D. Lot 4 was a son of RHR Hoover X727, and out of a SAV Final Answer 0035 daughter, with a 70 pound birth weight and a BW EPD of 0.75.

Lot 6 was a performance bull going back to Sitz Upward 307R. Born at 84 pounds, he grew well, with a November weight of 1,690 pounds.

Lot 20 was another Download son with a 16.0 square inch rib eye. Born at 78 pounds, his EPDs were BW 2.6, WW 69, YW 113 and MILK 25.

Lot 22 was a quality selection for a heifer bull. He was born at 76 pounds and weaned at 710 pounds. His EPDs included BW 1.3, WW 52, YW 109, and MILK 24.

The females have been a feature at this production sale every year. The bred females topped their market at $2,750 on a set of bred heifers selling to repeat buyer, Maurice Ham, Shadehill, S.D.

This was a very good set of cattle, and a great sale for the Weller family.
