What a great day to get ahold of some powerful genetics from one of the top herds in the world at the 5L ‘Right for the Times’ Annual Spring Sale. Held at the ranch near Sheridan, Montana, there was a thick crowd going through the bulls with a fine-toothed comb. The wide body comes as a standard on this outfit as well as efficiency. It was exciting to see all the information for buyers to positively purchase the right bull for them. Kenner Simmental Ranch of Leads, N.D., took home the top heifer of the sale for $16,000, a 5L Defender 560-30Z daughter that everybody liked. With cattle heading to 20 states and Canada this year, it’s a pleasure to present these top end bulls from a top end herd:
Digging deep in the sale order, Lot 290, 5L Advantage 560-65B, was purchased for $52,000 by Croissant Red Angus of Briggsdale, CO. This is a 5L Advantage 3267-221Y son posted EPDs of BW -2.5, WW 58, YW 91, and Milk 26. He was born 2/9/14 weighing in at 70 pounds and is going to make a premium heifer bull.
Lot 2, 5L Blockade 2218-30B, got the attention early selling for $36,000 to Dykes Cattle Co. of Walla Walla, WA and TJS Red Angus of Lodge Grass, Montana. This 5L Defender 560-30Z son was born Feb. 4, 2014 weighing 86 pounds and has a wide body score of 9! He posted EPDs of BW -4.8, WW 43, YW 67, and Milk 23.
Lot 5, 5L Big Iron 4558-28B, is headed to Crump Red Angus of Gillette, Wyoming, for $24,000. Another 560-30Z son from a top cow family posting EPDs of BW -2.5, WW 59, YW 92, and Milk 22. He was born Feb. 1, 2014, weighing 80 pounds and a WW ratio of 106.
Lot 3, 5L Guardian 2206-209V, another 560-30Z son, sold for $18,000 to Brady Bowles of Chinook, MT. This heifer bull posted EPDs of BW -3.9, WW 40, YW 70, and Milk 26. He was born Feb. 26, 2014, weighing 78 pounds and has a 97 WW ratio.
Also selling for $18,000, this time to Gary Sonstegard of Montevideo, Minnesota, was Lot 116, 5L Paycheck 560-68B. Here was a 5L Advantage 3267-221Y son with heifer bull status born Feb. 9, 2014, weighing 79 pounds. His EPDs included BW -3.4, WW 56, YW 89, and Milk 25.
Kelly Olson of Athabasca, Alberta was the winning bidder at $17,000 on Lot 22, 5L Defender 4891-194B. They liked the 560-30Z son all day and this one was no different posting EPDs of BW -3.1, WW 52, YW 84, and Milk 25. He weighed 74 pounds at birth on Feb. 25, 2014, and has a 104 WW ratio.
