The Slovek Ranch is located just north of Philip, S.D. Owners Bill and Pennie Slovek and their son, Bo, were hosts for the day. Sloveks brought an outstanding set of two-year-old bulls, along with a beautiful set of bred heifers to Philip Livestock Auction.
This year’s sale was dampened a bit by a major winter storm in the area that dropped a foot of snow, and closed the major interstate highway system in western South Dakota. A decent crowd still made their way to compete for these outstanding, strong age bulls. Many were repeat buyers that readily bid up to buy this good set of bulls.
I felt this was the best set of bulls that Bill and Bo had ever put together. Many of the top selling calves that are sold through Philip Livestock are sired by Slovek bulls.
Bo Slovek’s registered Angus bulls were topped by Lot 16 at $7,750. He was a son of Sitz Dynasty 264Z, and out of ALC Clova 28T, a daughter of River Hills Paragon P35. With a 75 pound birth weight, he posted a weaning weight ratio of 102. He had an IMF ratio of 133, and a rib eye area of 15.9 square inches. His EPDs were BW -0.4, WW 47, YW 99, MILK 25, MARB 0.62, RE 0.88, and $Beef 131.64. He sold to repeat buyer, Fitch Farms, Philip, S.D., for $7,750.
Seth Thomsen, Long Valley, S.D., bought the Lot 4 Angus bull at $7,500. Here was a son of PA Fortitude 2500, and out of a daughter of GT Shear Force. Lot 5 sold at $7,250 to Tom Clements, Philip, S.D. He had good numbers, including $B 147.49.
Bill and Pennie Slovek topped their Sim Angus bulls with Lot 39 selling for $6,500 to repeat buyer, Kelly Blair, Milesville, S.D. This was one of the stoutest bulls that they have ever raised. He was 60 percent Simmental and 40 percent Angus, and packed full of muscle and thickness. He had EPDs of BW -3.6, WW 58, YW 91, Marb 0.6, and RE 0.28. Born at 95 pounds, he weaned at 743 pounds to ratio 124.
Sean Deal, Cherry Creek, S.D., topped his purchases with Lot 40 at $6,000. This Sim Angus bull was a son of 316X, and was Homozygous Black. He had a weaning weight ratio of 115 and a rib eye ratio of 113.
The weather did stop some buyers, and they had a few bulls left at the end of the sale. If you need some really good bulls, give Bill or Bo a call.
