Spear U Angus, owned by Greg and Lori Shearer, along with their son, Jace and Tisha Shearer and their family, hosted a huge crowd for their annual bull sale held at Philip Livestock Auction. This herd has built a reputation for thick made, easy-fleshing cattle that maintain excellent carcass characteristics. Their whole program revolves around females that take care of themselves and their calves.

This sale offered many large groups of half, three-quarter and full brother bulls that breed alike. Calving ease and good udders are a given with the Spear U cattle. Many of the high selling Angus feeder cattle sold at the Philip Auction are sired by Spear U Bulls.
All of the bulls in this sale were 50K tested by Zoetis, and many had incredible EPDs for Beef Value. There is a wealth of data on each bull in their catalog.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 2, a 3-1-13 two-year-old bull sired by Connealy Confidence 0100. Out of a daughter of GT Shear Force, he had EPDs of BW -0.5, WW 48. MILK 31, and YW 97. He weaned at 686 pounds and had a yearling weight of 1,275 pounds to go with a 40 cm. scrotal. He sold to repeat buyer, Larry and Scot Eisenbraun, Creighton, S.D., for $18,500.
Mitch and Kelly Paulsen, Custer, S.D., bought Lot 19, another 2-year-old bull, at $11,500. He was a son of AAR Ten X 7008 SA, and out of a cow by E&B 878 New Design 435. Born at 72 pounds, he weaned at 710 pounds to ratio 107. His EPDs were BW 0.7, WW 58, MILK 28, YW 112, MARB 1.32, and RE 0.57, along with a $Beef of 134.44.
Lot 16, also a 2-year-old, sold for $11,500 to Jeff Anderson, Pierce, Neb. He was sired by AAR Ten X and out of a daughter of Connealy Consensus 7229. He had an 85 pound birth weight and a weaning weight of 752 pound to ratio 113. His stats were completed with EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 73, MILK 27, YW 124, and $B 133.95.
Ty and Kelly Fish, Buffalo Gap, S.D., were back again this year to buy Lot 25 at $11,500. He was an embryo transfer yearling calf sired by Ten X and out of a GAR Expectation daughter. EPDs were BW -0.7, WW 57, MILK 23, YW 107, MARB 0.94, RE 0.6, and $B 122.43.
It was once again $11,500 when the gavel fell and this time the winner was Kjerstad Cattle, Quinn, S.D., who had purchased Lot 6. This bull was a son of the increasingly popular, Baldridge Waylon W34. He had a weaning weight of 727 pound to ratio 113. His EPDs were BW 3.9, WW 69, MILK 24, YW 118, MARB 0.84, RE 0.86, and $B 131.28.
