The Vermilion Ranch fall performance sale was another huge success for this longtime Angus family. The Vermilion Ranch is owned by Babe Goggins and her large family. They produce truckloads of outstanding Angus cattle across Montana. The weather was beautiful, and a large crowd had filled the PAYS arena all day.

I was very impressed to view this large offering of high quality Angus cattle. Many of the top bulls were selected by registered breeders, but there was also tremendous demand by commercial ranchers from several states.

A highlight of the sale was the complete offering of bred females from the Vermilion Ranch, that were born in 2009. The commercial bred heifers were another real attraction. Most were AI’d to the herd bulls, and were ultrasounded for short calving periods and for bull and heifer calves

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1, selling for $37,500 to Clear Creek Angus, Chinook, Montana. He was a son of Connealy Spur, and out of a daughter of Sitz Madison 10477. This bull was very massive, being extra deep-bodied and packed full of thickness both front and rear. His EPDs were BW 2.7, WW 61, YW 111, MILK 24, MARB 0.74, RE 0.49, $W 56.86, $F 75.72, and $B 132.22. With an 86 pound birth weight, he weaned at 711 pounds, and posted a yearling weight of 1,399 pounds.

TC Ranch from Franklin, Nebraska, chose Lot 7 at $31,500. He was sired by Connealy Spur and out of a daughter of Baldridge Nebraska 901. Born at 86 pounds, he weaned at 749 pounds, and grew to a yearling weight of 1,309 pounds. He had EPDs of BW 0.5, WW 56, YW 102, MILK 24, MARB 0.77, RE 0.50, $W 61.92, and $B 108.56.

Lot 100 sold for $19,000 to Jennaway Angus from Melstone, Montana. He was another fall bull, sired by SAV Privilege 3030. He had an 82 pound birth weight, a weaning weight of 741 pounds, and a yearling weight of 1,343 pounds. His EPDs were BW 2.5, WW 64, YW 111, MILK 23, MARB 0.39, RE 0.80, $W 63.10, and $B 132.41.

Waibel Ranches from Powell Butte, Oregon, chose two top bulls in Lots 3 and 13, each at $17,000. The Lot 3 bull was a son of Connealy Spur and out of a Sitz Madison daughter. He had EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 62, YW 105, MILK 27, MARB 0.61, RE 0.24, $W 67.83, and $B122.09. The Lot 13 bull was also sired by Spur. He had an 84 pound birth weight, a weaning weight of 753 pounds, and a yearling weight of 1,326 pounds.

In the registered bred female portion of the sale, Lot 417 sold for $8,500 to MY Angus at Chinook, Montana. She was a daughter of Leachman Right Time, and was bred to HA Cowboy Up 5405. Also at $8500 was Lot 429, selling to Harlan Angus from KayCee, Wyoming. Her bull calf is sired by HA Cowboy Up 5405.

The top bred heifer was Lot 601, selling for $7,000 to Ben McRae from Jordon, Montana.

The top draft of commercial bred heifers brought $2,000.
