The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association held their 12th Annual showcase sale at the Besler Cadillac Ranch on Aug. 20. RQHBA is an group of breeders that strive to breed sound, structurally-correct horses that will go out and get the job done for the new owners. The colts were sired by some of the top stallions in the area and out of some of the best-bred brood mares in the Midwest.

The weanlings sold in this sale are eligible to come back for the RQHBA Futurity show held during the Central States Fair in Rapid City, to compete for some very nice premiums.

The riding horses were consigned by RQHBA members or selected from reputable horsemen in the tri-state area.

Top selling weanlings

Lot 24, a May 2012 buckskin stud colt sired by PC Ikewood Oaks and out of a WS Sabre Driftwood sired mare. The colt was consigned by Chaffee-Herron Ranch, Union Center, SD, and sold to Gary and Sharon Romey, Hot Springs, SD, for $1,500.

Tom and Shannon Coolahan, Hermosa, SD, purchased the next top selling weanling at $1,200. Lot 53, Addalittlestyle is a May 2012 buckskin stud colt sired by Sir Bea Cowboy and out of an Addalittlehickory X High Style Hickory bred mare that was consigned by Long Quarter Horses, Enning, SD.

Lot 52, High Style Chic, also from Long Quarter Horses sold to Darryl Biers, Scenic, SD, for $900. This May 2012 Palomino filly is sired by Paddys Shot of Suger and out of a High Style Hickory X Docs Hickory mare.

Denny and Doris Lauing, Sturgis, SD, selected lot 50, Justa Snip of Perks, an April 2012 bay filly by Signature Perks (Dash for Perks) and out of a Snip of Colonel X Colonel Freckles mare. This filly was consigned by Bar JT Quarter Horses, Volberg, MT, and sold for $750.

Also selling at $750 was lot 57, Bar Kings Trademark, a May 2012 Palomino stud colt sired by Frenchmans Trademark (PC Frenchmans Mark) out of a Biebers Doc Colonel bred mare. This colt was consigned by Bender Quarter Ranch, Mobridge, SD, and sold to Travis Rogers, Hermosa, SD.

Topping the riding horses was lot 72, Which Witch is Hot, a 2006 red dun mare consigned by Jim and Ethel Whitcher. This mare has done it all on the ranch and has been hauled and won a few checks in the barrel racing. She has the potential to go on in most any direction desired. She is sired by Red Hot Quixote (Doc Quixote) and out of a No Brakes Now X The Signature mare. Delbert Cobb, Red Owl, SD, was the buyer at $5,200.

Selling at $4,100 was lot 71, Smokin Frosty Moon, a 2007 sorrel gelding sired by Cee Heart Moon Lena and out of a Frenchmans Image mare. This gelding has been used exclusively on the ranch but has the pedigree and try to be a top arena horse. The horse was consigned by Lucas and Melinda Stolhammer and purchased by Jeff Thorstenson.

Wyatt Mollman, Morristown, SD, purchased the next high selling riding horse for $4,000. Lot 11, Louieville Charmer is a 2010 red roan gelding, sired by Krogs Majestic Blue and out of a HC Ole Charm mare. This gelding was consigned by Jensen Quarter Horses, White River, SD.

Lot 74, Bo Country, consigned by Jason Reed sold to Mike Verber, Rock Valley, IA, for $3,900. This 8-year-old gray gelding was sired by Country Twerp and out of a Jenny Bo Bark mare. This gelding has been used exclusively on the ranch but could be a jackpot heading horse.

Selling also at $3,900 was lot 45, YO Genuine Silver, A 2-year-old gelding sired by Hancock Silver Tonka and out of a Genuine Diamond mare. This mare was consigned by the Merrill Ranch, Wall, SD, and was purchased by Seth Moreland, Red Owl, SD.
