2010 Feedlot School set for Aug. 12 at Panhandle Center

The 2010 Feedlot School sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is an educational opportunity for feedlot employees that is intended to increase efficiency and coordination and ultimately improve feed yard profitability.

The workshop is scheduled for Aug. 12 at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program will conclude by 3:40 p.m.

Preregistration is requested by Aug. 6, by calling the Scotts Bluff County Extension Office at 308-632-1480. The $15 per person fee includes lunch, materials and breaks.

Topics and speakers include:

• Composing, saving and transferring digital images (Dr. Justin Welsh, DVM)

• Signs of Illness (Dr. Welsh)

• Sick Pen management (Dr. Richard Randle, DVM, of University of Nebraska-Lincoln)

• Treatment Efficacy (Dr. Dave Smith, DVM, of UNL

• Feeding: Standard Practices (Dr. Karla Jenkins, UNL Beef Specialist, and Dr. Mike Sindt, Nutritionist for Midwest PMS)

• Communications to Increase Efficiencies (Taia Huls, M.S., Winner Circle Feedyard, Minatare)

• Handling Downer Cattle and Deads (Melody Benjamin, Nebraska Cattlemen)

• Cattle Welfare Issues (Dr. Dee Griffin, DVM, UNL).
