Records are meant to be broken and once again the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, now in it’s 56th year, has proven it can be done. The 2014 edition of the Exiss/Sooner Horse Sale attracted buyers and sellers from across the Nation to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center here in Rapid City. The sale was presented during the opening weekend of the BHSS on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
Following a daily preview each morning at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds, the consignors converged on Rushmore Hall at the Civic Center in downtown Rapid City. The 171 select consignments were carefully screened and sold through the Crystalyx BioBarrel Sale Ring. Standing room only crowds again filled the facility to capacity and the active bidding also involved Internet bidding provided by Alan and Cindy Taylor of http://www.horseauctions.com. They also provided nonstop live webcast coverage for the horse and rodeo events at the Event Center for the entire duration of the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo.
Auctioneer Lynn Weishaar, Reva, S.D., and Announcer John E. Johnson from Piedmont, S.D. rolled through the rapid paced sale each afternoon with record books tallying 565 buyers registered from 16 states. Corporate sponsorship for 2014 included Exiss/Sooner; Ravelette Publishing, Inc.; Cattle Business Weekly; Scoggins Veterinary; and Larry Larson Photography, Inc.
Setting a new BHSS sale record was Shiners Oakie Val – a proven producer of NRCHA and 1D barrel money earners consigned by Justin and Leslie Hill from Peyton, Colo. Leaving the ring on a bid of $35,000, the 1999 Sorrel Mare was sired by leading performance sire Shining Spark and out of Smokum Sam, a granddaughter of Doc’s Oak. Safe in foal to NCHA Open Finals Champion WR This Cats Smart, she has joined the broodmare band of Mark and Deb Pieper. Located Southeast of Hay Springs, Neb., the ranch stands Shiner Smart Cat, a son of WR This Cats Smart out of the great producing daughter of Shining Spark named Miss Shiner Dear. Their band of mares includes the bloodlines of Doc O Dynamite, Playgun, Tiger Handy and Sixes Pick among others.
Also consigned on the Saturday sale was One Time Big Boy, sired by 2004 NCHA Open Futurity Finalist and 2012 NRCHA #1leading sire One Time Pepto by Peptoboonsmal. The Garrett Ranch from Pierre, S.D., had the final bid of $20,000 on the 2008 Red Roan Gelding out of an own daughter of Doc O’Lena. Consignor was JD Gerard from Kennebec, S.D.
Complimenting the 2014 BHSS Horse Sale was the presentation of 20 of the region’s leading stallions on Stallion Row. The stallion owners had the opportunity to showcase their stallions to the public, parade them prior to the sale each day and book 2014 breedings during the event.
Prior to the first horse entering the ring on the Saturday sale, a fundraiser was held with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Rancher Relief Fund. The fund was initiated following the devastating early October blizzard known as ‘Atlas’ that caused enormous losses in the cattle and horse industries throughout this region. Haythorn Land and Cattle Company, Arthur, Neb., donated their sale consignment adding over $6,000 to the fund. Wyoming artist and rancher Allyson Shoun offered an original framed and matted painting and Leo and Sam McDonnell from McDonnell Angus, Columbus, Mont., offered a metal ‘child-proof’ hand crafted children’s corral set. Their generous donations were greatly appreciated.
