The Eleventh Annual Mattson Performance Horse Sale was held May 17 at its new location two miles north of Sturgis, S.D., at the old Roth Arena which is the new location for Mattson Performance Horses and Training Facility.

There were 53 horses that previewed both Friday and Saturday. After a cold winter and spring, we had two beautiful days for the consignors to show their horses to a nice crowd from several states.

Grant and Landa Scheer, Big Piney, Wyo., sold both the high selling and second high selling horses. The high selling horse was Lot 25, a 9-year-old gelding shown in the heading, and sold to Clay Schaack of Wall, S.D., for the price of $18,500.

The second high selling horse was Lot 2, an 11-year-old head horse, sold to Erin Simon, Rapid City, S.D., for the purchase price of $17,000. Both of these geldings of Scheers’ were quick footed horses that had been hauled, and were ready to go anywhere.

The third high seller was Lot 26, an 8-year-old sorrel gelding consigned by Rod Schaffer of Broadus, Mont., and purchased by Breezy Miller, Sturgis, S.D., for $9,900.

Next in line was Lot 5, a 6-year-old mare offered by Mattson Performance Horses and shown in the calf roping. This mare sold for $9,500, and was purchased by Bob Packer, Sturgis, S.D., for his three boys that all rope calves.

Lot 45 was an 11-year-old gelding shown by Scott and Carey Mackey in the barrels and team roping, and purchased by Tim Nutter, Rapid City, S.D., at $9,500. Clint Hufty, Rapid City, sold Lot 44, an 8-year-old finished heel horse, for $9,500 to Pete and Donna Buer, Belle Fourche, S.D.

The top 10 average was $11,525 and the overall average was $6,183. The Mattsons would like to thank all the consignors and buyers for making the sale so successful and look forward to offering quality horses for the 2015 sale.

Please friend Mattson Arena on Facebook so you can watch for upcoming events. They would love to see everyone at their weekly Tuesday night team roping, starting June 3. Enter at 5:30 p.m. and rope at 6 p.m. Thanks again to all for making this another successful sale.
