4-H fun for everyone

Amanda Nolz

One year ago, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and the South Dakota 4-H Program teamed up to build awareness about agriculture issues and events through the inaugural Legislative Beef Showmanship Contest held at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, SD. The event was such a success that it was duplicated at a county fair this summer in Silver Lake, IN after a 4-H member read about the show and how it united legislators with agriculture’s youth. Because it was such a popular event, the second year of the showmanship contest was well-attended at the 2010 South Dakota State Fair, as well.

This high profile event had state legislators working with 4-H youth in a beef showmanship contest. 4-H kids worked with their legislators to teach them how to show cattle, while the legislators taught the students about the government process. Not only was it a fun event for everyone involved, but it helped create a positive buzz about agriculture to those who make the big decisions in Pierre.

Coaching the legislators were South Dakota 4-H members: Samantha Keller, Rachelle Moore, Alli Lakness, Alexa Montagne, Elizabeth Dahl, Tosha Opheim, Kristyne Thull, Nicollete Schmidt, Christian Hojer, Tess Johnson, Jill Stern, Hanna Roe, Adam Eichacker, Caroline Hansen, Riley Buck, David Strain, Jacob Englin, Cordell Wobig, Rebecca Naasz and Dayton Venderwal.

Participating legislators included: Senator Julie Bartling (District 26), Representative Jacqueline Sly (District 33), Representative Charles Hoffman (District 23), Representative Dan Lederman (District 16), Senator Ben Nesselhuf (District 17), Representative Larry Tidemann (District 7), Senator Tom Hansen (District 22), Representative Peggy Gibson (District 22), Senator Jim Hundstad (District 2), Senator Jason Gant (District 11), Representative Dennis Feickert (District 3), Representative Shantel Krebs (District 10), Representative H. Paul Dennert (District 2), Representative Jason Frerichs (District 1), Representative Quinten Burg (District 22), Representative Dean Wink (District 29), Representative Oran Sorenson (District 25), Representative Susan Wismer (District 1) and Senator Mike Vehle (District 20).
