9 GOP candidates confirmed for Iowa Ag Summit, leftist farm groups plan alternative forums
Nine Republican presidential candidates have confirmed that they will attend the Iowa Ag Summit on March 7. The Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement has announced its counter-programming, the Food & Ag Justice Summit, on March 6-7, The Des Moines Register reported today.
The 2015 Iowa Ag Summit will take place at the Elwell Family Food Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST on Saturday, March 7.
The forum is organized by Bruce Rastetter, an Iowa Republican donor, and the Concordia Group.
The nine candidates who have confirmed are former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former New York Gov. George Pataki, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and New York businessman Donald Trump.
Other Republican and Democratic candidates have also been invited. Iowa Republican Gov. Terry Branstad and other Iowa politicians are scheduled to attend.
The Food & Ag Justice Summit will be co-sponsored by Food & Water Watch, the Oakland Institute and the National Family Farm Coalition.
Those events will include a “People and Planet First Social” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 6 at CCI Headquarters, 2001 Forest Ave., Des Moines; a “Food & Ag Justice Speakout” from 8 to 11 a.m. March 7 at the Elwell Family Center on the fairgrounds; and a “Food & Ag Justice Teach-In” from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 7 at Simpson United Methodist Church, 2600 Capitol Ave., Des Moines.
