Ag economics conference set in Bozeman Nov. 14

BOZEMAN, MT – High commodity prices, increasing input costs, a new farm bill and many other challenges are facing Montana’s agricultural producers. How agricultural producers can thrive in the face of these challenges is the focus of a conference in Bozeman Nov. 14.

Montana State University Extension and MSU Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics experts will address many of the current issues facing Montana agricultural producers, including agricultural climate change policy, federal farm bill policy, commodity markets and agricultural renewable energy opportunities.

The conference will be held in the Hager Auditorium of MSU’s Museum of the Rockies beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.

The conference is designed to provide agricultural producers, community leaders and people in ag-related industries with unbiased information about the issues.

The interaction between climate change and Montana agriculture will be the focus of keynote speaker John Antle. Duane Griffith will discuss a new tool designed to allow producers to evaluate whether wind energy production can be effectively used to power irrigation systems. Joel Schumacher will provide an overview of renewable energy programs in the 2008 Farm Bill. George Haynes and Vince Smith will describe commodity programs, crop insurance and other programs in the 2008 Farm Bill. Grain and livestock market outlooks will be provided by Dave Buschena and Gary Brester. Myles Watts will discuss the economics of brucellosis in Montana.

The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion of “The Future of Agriculture in Montana from 2010 to 2020.”
