Alumni of 4-H celebrate 106th National 4-H Week Oct. 5-11
Thousands of South Dakota 4-H alumni will celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 5 through Oct. 11.
They will look back on their 4-H careers with appreciation of the skills they learned, the experiences they had, and the knowledge they gained.
In an effort to learn more about what South Dakota alumni value about their 4-H experience, South Dakota State University has created an online survey to give them opportunities to tell their stories.
The survey is available at the South Dakota 4-H Web site: http://4h.sdstate.edu. Go to the site, then click on the “Alumni survey” link located on the page.
Across the country, 4-H alumni list public speaking, decision-making, leadership development, and an understanding of community as the most important things they received from the program.
The basic survey allows South Dakota 4-H to gather information that provides a snapshot of the long-term benefits of participation in 4-H, as determined by actual past participants. While the basic survey is simple, participants may write at length about their experiences and what they meant.
Kathryn Reeves, South Dakota Cooperative Extension 4-H and youth development specialist, said the survey is important as it shows current members the long-lasting influence 4-H can have.
“We hope the surveys and accompanying narratives will give us information we can use to strengthen the 4-H experience for current members,” she said. “In addition to the survey, alumni also may indicate if they wish to be contacted about volunteer opportunities, including judging at local events, giving project-related seminars, mentoring 4-H members, leading a club, or assisting with regional or national activities.”
Any community member interested in volunteering may use the club’s Web site. Click on the alumni survey choice, and then fill out the volunteer interest survey located there.
