Alvin M. Tescher, 89, Beach, ND, rode home to his heavenly Father at the St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck, on Sept. 21, 2010, at 6:15 p.m. Services were held at 1 p.m. MDT Saturday, Sept. 25, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Beach, with the Rev. Russ Kovash officiating. Burial will be at Sentinel Butte Cemetery.
A rosary/vigil service was held at 7 p.m. MDT Friday, Sept. 24, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Beach.
Al was born March 4, 1921, the fourth of 15 children of Matt and Antoinette Tescher, Sentinel Butte. He received his education at Camel Hump Grade School and Sentinel Butte High School. While in high school, he was named to the All-State Football Team. He was a Golden Gloves boxer, fighting nine bouts. He served 18 months in the Armed Services during World War II. Al followed the rodeo circuit for about six years as a contestant and judge.
He was united in marriage with Elizabeth “Betty” Buehner on July 8, 1947, at the Catholic Church in Werner; they had 12 children. Al’s priorities were God, family, friends and ranching; the family prayed the rosary daily. He bought and sold and lived with family on many ranches during his lifetime in western North Dakota and eastern Montana.
Al was considered a top hand and an expert horseman. As a rancher, Al truly enjoyed riding, working with and gentling horses; he was respected by many for his knowledge of horses and ranch cattle. With his family, he operated the Tescher Trail Rides at the Peaceful Valley Ranch in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He was a member of the Medora Grazing Association, School Board, Knights of Columbus and on the Diocese Parish Council. He was a hard worker, a sports fan and most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren. Al had a good sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh.
Al is survived by his caring and loving wife, Betty; children, Barbara (Gary) Brandow, Columbia Falls, MT, Robert (Karen), Bismarck, Ray (Jill), Beach, Kay (Don) Williams, Bismarck, Ren (Ann), Pine Island, MN, Jeffry (Paulette), Bismarck, Nona (Bob) Niece, Beach, John (Kim), Billings, MT, Mary (Chris) Majka, Bellevue, NE, and Jay (Jodi), Warren, MN; a daughter-in-law, Norma, Dickinson; 28 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and sisters, Joan, Dona and Alice.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tim; an infant daughter, Kathleen; brothers, Pete, Toney, Jim, Tom, Don and Matt; sisters, Cecilia, Marie, Antoinette, Rosalie and Rosemarie; and one grandchild, Jordin (daughter of Jeffry and Paulette).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Home on the Range, Sentinel Butte, or to your favorite charity. Al made the world a better place and will truly be missed by all who loved him. Please pray for Al and his family.
