Art in the barn: Newell, SD, June 19-20
June 25, 2015
Food and fiber are the necessities agriculture is famous for. While most meat animals produce both leather and edible protein, sheep provide a third useful item. Wool has provided additional income and clothing for sheep producers since time began.
Barb Uhrig of Newell, South Dakota, has raised purebred Cheviot sheep for over 30 years.
To provide a gathering place for fiber enthusiasts, she introduced the "Art in the barn" fleece and fiber festival to be held this year at the Newell, South Dakota, rodeo grounds, June 19-20, 2015.
Fleece judging, wool lead line, showmanship, and goat shows are just a few of the activities planned.
For the fifth in a row, Uhrig will oversee a "basket drive," gathering items for women battling breast cancer. In years past she has delivered 20 baskets to cancer patients the week following the event.
