Gelbvieh: The National Gelbvieh sale, held Jan. 9, 2011 at the National Western Stock Show, Denver, CO, set the tone for the 2011 bull sale season. The sale averaged: 1 bull – $24,000; 4 flush opportunities – $3,562; 6 pick-of-the-herds – $13,042; 2 bred heifers – $6,375; and 15 open heifers – $4,067. In all, 28 lots averages $6,795. The highest selling lot brought $42,500 from Jumping Cow Gelbvieh, Ramah, CO, for the pick of their 2011 NWSS show string.

Selected out of this show string was JCGR BAR GT Cross Fire 500W ET, a July 2009 son of RID R Collateral 2R. The “Caught in the Cross Fire” syndicate purchased the herd sire, which included, Jim and Barb Beastrom, Pierre, SD; Rogers Valley Farm Gelbvieh, Mendon, MO; Warner Beef Genetics, Beaver City, NE; Cranview Gelbvieh, Minot, ND; LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, KS; Green Hills Gelbvieh, Mt. Ulla, NC; Handel Farms, Menno, SD; Goldux Gelbvieh, Wessington, SD; Judd Ranch, Inc., Pomona, KS; Bar Arrow Cattle Company, Phillipsburg, KS; Triple K Gelbvieh, Bonner Springs, KS; Brandon McEndaffer, New Raymer, CO; Little Windy Hill Farms, Max Meadows, VA; M Heart D Gelbvieh, Stevensville, MT and Middle Creek Farms, Bozeman, MT; Two Step Ranch and McCabe Cattle Company, Farley, IA; and Boehler Gelbvieh, Orleans, NE.

Hereford: Embryo package sells for $31,000 to benefit Hereford youth on Jan. 14 in the Beef Palace Auction Arena at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

The Torrance family of Torrance Polled Herefords, Media, IL, bought Lot 1 for $31,000. With the purchase, the Torrances bought 40 Grade 1 embryos from the heart of Hoffman Ranch LLC and Hoffman/W4 LLC’s elite donor program. All of the proceeds go to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA).

Shorthorn: $10,000 in scholarship are available for American Junior Shorthorn Association (ASJA) breeders.

AJSA members are eligible to apply for one of six different college scholarships: Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship, John C. “Jack” Ragsdale Scholarship, Don Longley Memorial Scholarships, Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship, Jesse M. & Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship, and new in 2011 is the Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship.
