BBQ beef cook-off and chili challenge slated for the fair

HURON, SD – People who attend the South Dakota State Fair will have a chance to taste some of the best barbecued brisket and chili in the state at cook-offs on Saturday, Sept. 4, in Horticulture Park.

The Jack’s Campers Chili Challenge will be the first of two cook-offs held that day at the fair. Contestants will arrive in the morning to start brewing their chili. Formal judging of the chili challenge will be at noon. Fairgoers will have an opportunity to pick their favorite chili by participating in the people’s choice judging at 1 p.m. to taste free chili from each contestant.

The winner of the Chili Challenge will receive $250 in cash and a plaque; second- and third-place finishers receive $150 and $75, respectively.

The South Dakota State Fair BBQ Beef Cook-Off, presented by 1st Financial Bank USA and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, will kick off on the evening of Friday, Sept. 3, when contestants begin checking in. They’ll barbecue all night to produce the most tender brisket possible.

At 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, fairgoers will be able to pick their favorite brisket by participating in the people’s choice judging by tasting brisket from each contestant for free. Formal judging also begins at 4 p.m.

The champion in the BBQ Beef Cook-Off will receive $500; second- and third-place winners will get $250 and $125, respectively. All place winners will receive trophies

Winners of the people’s choice competitions will get cash prizes and trophies, too.

Applications for the Jack’s Campers Chili Challenge and the BBQ Beef Cook-Off are now available online at or at the South Dakota State Fair office. The deadline for entering either competition is Aug. 23.
