Beef Bucks celebrates a dozen years with event on the green
September 15, 2014
For the twelfth year, Beef Bucks' volunteer board of directors hosted their annual Beef Bucks Golf Classic. In spite of an early morning rain, the event started off with a shotgun start at the Brandon Municipal Golf Course with 48 teams of four swinging for championship status, ending the day-long event with a succulent 16 ounce rib eye steak compliments of National Beef.
The Beef Bucks Golf Classic is an event held every year to enable the funding of a scholarship program and special projects like the Wheel of Fortune Beef Bucks prize. In addition, Beef Bucks promotes beef at events including the South Dakota Law Enforcement Banquet, South Dakota Junior High Rodeo, South Dakota State University Football Summer Olympics and many other functions. To date, Beef Bucks has provided nearly $35,000 in scholarships to students (traditional and non-traditional) with backgrounds in the beef industry that are attending vocational schools or colleges.
The success of the event is two fold – the number of participants and the great sponsors of the day. For example, in the past several years, National Beef, based in Kansas City, Mo., has donated annually more than 200 rib eye steaks for the Beef Bucks Golf Classic dinner. Fenske Cattle Company, Woonsocket, S.D., sponsored the Beef Bucks Classic Poker Run during the golf play, which was won by Keith Kilgore. Prostrollo's All-American Auto Mall, Madison, S.D., has sponsored the Hole-In-One competition for many years and the Texas Roadhouse restaurant sends Andy Armadillo with gift certificates and peanuts for the golfers. John Deere Company provides Gators for the day as well as auction items. New sponsor, Nichols Fencing, De Smet, S.D., provided a pin prize at each of the 18 holes. Col. Jon Phillips with his Price Discovery Report is at the event broadcasting the markets and visiting with the people. National Republic had refreshments on the course for the golfers. A large number of other businesses and individuals sponsor team prizes and auction items to make the event a huge success.
Again, for the fourth year in a row the top dollar-generating auction item was donated by the Henry Repeating Arms Company – a Henry Golden Boy .22 American Farmer Tribute rifle with a wall mount – purchased by Howard Hillman of Sioux Falls. Other items for auction were pitcher, Phil Hughes, signed baseball donated by the Minnesota Twins, a Men's Day Out guided fishing trip on the Missouri River donated by Huron Continental Marketing. John Deere Company provided a trike with trailer, a stake bed wagon, Monster Tread remote control tractor and a kids John Deere electric ride-on tractor with loader. Other items were donate by Republic National Distributing Company, Johnson Brothers and SDSU Ag & Bio Sciences.
This year's winning teams in the Beef Bucks Golf Classic were: Championship Flight: first place – First Premier Bank, second place – Arden Nelson Insurance, third place – Avera Health; First Flight: first place – South East Farmer Cooperative, second place – Zoetis, third place – Tyson Transportation; Second Flight: first place – LUFCO, Inc., second place – Rave Sales, third place – Schoenfelder Farms and Third Flight: first place – Hillman Team, second place – SDSU College of Ag & Bio Sciences, third place – Moller Farms.
