Beef producers selected to lead South Dakota Beef Checkoff in 2011

BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) elected leaders for the next fiscal year at its annual meeting in Brookings. The SDBIC administers the $1 Beef Checkoff on cattle sold in South Dakota. Beef Checkoff dollars are utilized strictly for promotion, education or research programs. Fifty cents of every dollar is directed to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board for programs on the national level. The SDBIC retains 50 cents, which is invested in additional national projects or in-state programs.

Merrill Karlen of Oacoma, SD, was elected to a second term as president of the SDBIC; Karlen represents the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association. During Karlen’s time with the South Dakota Beef Council he was appointed to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board where he was chosen as a member of the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. He currently serves on the National Joint Advertising Committee.

South Dakota beef producer Ed Blair of Vale, SD, was reelected to be SDBIC Vice President. Blair has been active on SDBIC for many years representing South Dakota Farm Bureau. Blair has previously served as a director with the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB), acting as chairman and vice chairman of both the International Marketing Committee and CBB Audit Committee.



The SDBIC selected Roger Gerdes of Miller, SD, to a first term as SDBIC Treasurer. Gerdes was selected by the SDBIC to several terms with the Federation of State Beef Councils where he was active on the National Joint Advertising Committee. Gerdes is a director representing the South Dakota Beef Breeds Council.

The SDBIC also filled three seats representing South Dakota on the Federation of State Beef Councils. The Federation is supported by Beef Checkoff funds pooled by individual state beef councils. Federation revenues support national and international beef checkoff initiatives. Ed Blair, Vale, SD; Karla Pazour, Pukwana, SD; and Scott Jones, Midland, SD; were each selected for three year terms. They join current South Dakota Federation directors Becky Walth of Glenham, SD, who currently sits on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee and Georgia Talsma of Springfield, SD.



South Dakota’s Federation investment also entitles the SDBIC to sit three directors on the United States Meat Export Federation. Mike Gebhart of Meadow, SD, was reelected to another term with the USMEF, joining current USMEF mid-term board members from South Dakota, Wayne Tupper, Kimball, SD, and John Symens, Amherst, SD. The USMEF is a trade organization promoting international sales of US beef, pork and lamb

The SDBIC will meet for its next quarterly meeting Dec. 16, 2010 in Pierre, SD.
