RAPID CITY, SD – Carrying on a tradition now into it’s 61st year, the 2019 Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo started out their opening weekend with yet another premier offering at their 2-Day Truck Defender Horse Sale and Stallion Row. The sale was held at the Crystalyx BioBarrel Show Ring at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Jan. 25-26.

Following a daily preview each morning at the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds, consignors converged on Rushmore Hall at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in downtown Rapid City. Auctioneer Lynn Weishaar, Reva, S.D., and Announcer John E. Johnson from Piedmont, S.D., rolled through the 167 cataloged consignments with Hutchison HW Brand presenting jackets to the High Selling Consignor and High Selling Buyer. In addition, the 2019 Corporate Sponsorship list included the Truck Defender, Tri-State Livestock News and Larry Larson Photography, Inc.

Topping the 2019 sale was Jacspin Rey Bar, a 2012 Buckskin Gelding consigned by Ole Olson from Piedmont, S.D. (Agent JD Gerard, Kennebec, S.D.). Sired by Poco Rey Bar, he was out of Jacspin Dun It In 07, a Hollywood Dunnit/Jacspin bred mare. The finished head and heel horse sold on the Friday sale and after active live and online bidding, he left the ring on a bid of $35,000 from JHS Construction, Midland, Texas. Charles and Rebecca Peterson, Torrington, Wyoming, made the final bid at $30,000 on Itchiest, a 2014 Sorrel Gelding, on the Saturday sale. Consigned by Paul and Jana Griemsman from Piedmont, S.D., the proven heading and heeling horse is a son of NCHA Open Derby Champion Cat Ichi, and out of a daughter of Dual Rey, a $41 million dollar sire. Also selling on the Saturday sale was Gar Rose Bud, a 2009 Sorrel Mare sired by NRCHA Open Reined Cowhorse Stakes Champion and Open Derby Champion Nic It In The Bud by Reminic. Chris Herren, Crooks, S.D., had the bid at $29,500 on the mare consigned by Chad and Ali Miller from Bowman, N.D.

Now into it’s 11th year, the BHSS Ranch Horse Select competition was held on Friday morning during the preview of the sale horses at the Event Center Arena. Twelve select head of sale consignments were pre-entered in the judged competition this year. Capturing the 2019 Championship was Zana River, a 2010 Gray Gelding sired by Mr Zana Roan out of River Lacy by The River Tramp by Amego Tramp. Listed as a ‘Cadillac Ranch Horse,’ he was consigned by Levi Grimes from Kadoka, S.D. – a solid ranch gelding who was a proven heading and heeling horse with some tie-down experience.

Hutchison HW Brand Stallion Row once again showcased 14 of the region’s leading American Quarter Horse stallions in Rushmore Hall near the sale ring. Presented prior to each day of the sale in the BioBarrel Show Ring, they represented some of the Nation’s leading bloodlines – booking breedings for the upcoming season with many offering discounted Stock Show fees if booked during the event.

As an encouragement for young cowboys and cowgirls to keep the ranching heritage alive, the Lloyd W. Rypkema Memorial Quarter Horse Award has been presented each year at the Black Hills Stock Show and now into it’s 8th year. The 2019 winner was announced in the sale ring prior to the Saturday sale as Haley Husted, the 15-year-old daughter of Chad Husted and Vickie Tibbs-Husted, living on a ranch near Harrold, SD. She took possession of Frost Dancer, a 2018 Sorrel Stallion from the Open Box Rafter Ranch, sired by Frost Flash, a son of Frenchmans Guy, and out of Anna Bar Two, a granddaughter of Sonny Sugar and Devil Cat Dancer, the Rypkema’s favorite bloodline.
