Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo: Firefighters to be honored at Jan. 27 opening performance

Alaina Mousel, Editor

Firefighters are the highlight of the Jan. 27, 2011 rodeo festivities at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo (BHSSR). According to Jack Tomac, Rapid City Fire Department, the opening performance of the PRCA Silver Tour Rodeo will be a Fire Fighter Appreciation Night – the first of its kind at the BHSSR.

In appreciation for the service volunteer and career firefighters provide to their communities, Jim and Julie Sutton, Sutton Rodeos, Inc, will provide free admission to the Jan. 27 rodeo for all firefighters, with the purchase of an accompanying ticket.

To take advantage of the free admission, firemen and women will need to present a “Buy one, get one free” coupon. Tomac asks Fire Chiefs, or their designee, to poll their fire department members, compile list or quantity of coupons desired, and send him an e-mail to: jack.tomac@rcgov.org, with the desired quantity of tickets. He asks that requests be made per fire department, and made no later than Monday evening, Jan. 24. Coupons will then be mailed to each fire department as there will be no individual mailings.

Firefighter’s buy-one-get-one-free coupons can be redeemed at the Civic Center Ticket window when purchasing the accompanying ticket.

Highlighting the first performance of the PRCA Silver Tour Rodeo is rodeo clown Denny Halstead. “Denny is a career firefighter from Calgary, Alberta,” Tomac explained. “In addition, the Ellsworth Air Force Base Fire Department Ceremonial Guard will be presenting the colors that night.”

Other highlights on the opening day of the BHSSR include the first-ever Great American Wagon Train and Cattle Drive beginning at 3:30 p.m., followed by a Jim Thompson poetry reading and a chuckwagon supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Trade Show opens its doors at 5 p.m.
