Borns Angus Mature Cowherd Dispersion Sale

Steve Borns, owner of Borns Angus from Hazel, SD, hosted a large crowd for his mature cowherd dispersion at the Watertown Livestock auction market in northeastern South Dakota.

The Borns’ herd began selling registered Angus cattle in 1995, with their initial foundation cattle coming from Bud Severson. Many of those early cows carried the influence of Shoshone Viking and WYE breeding. Since that time he has used genetics from Greg Shearer’s Spear U Angus herd near Wall, SD, and Koupal’s Angus at Dante, SD.

The Borns’ cows are bred for low birthweight and easy-fleshing ability, along with good carcass traits and strong maternal traits with excellent udders. But the number-one trait in his herd is disposition. Steve’s cows are bred to produce calves that will grow with less grain.

Steve kept his females that were three years of age and younger.

Top-selling cow of the day was Lot 12, selling for $3,300 to LaVern Koupal from Dante, SD. She was a daughter of Koupals Xception 413, and out of a daughter of Koupals B&B Focus1011. She had EPDs of BW 1.7, WW 44, YW 80, and Milk 21. She was an April 2008 model and bred to Sua Legend U8404.

Lot 29 sold for $2,900 to Mathew Laepke from Courtland, MN. She was BA Lady Focus 856, a daughter of Mytty In Focus, and out of a daughter of SAR Viking 227. She was a coming four-year-old cow, and bred back to Sua Legend U8404 for an April calf. Her EPDs were BW 2.4, WW 50, YW 83, and Milk 25.

Delton Gimbel from Ree Heights, SD, paid $2,900 to buy Lot 5, a cow due in April to Sua Legend. This cow April 2008 daughter of BA Right On 610, and had ratioed 115 on her first calf. Her EPDs were BW 0.3, WW 42, YW 77, and Milk 26.

Lot 26 also brought $2,900, heading home with Dave Nolz from Mitchell, SD. With the name of BA 5050 Effie 872, she was a daughter of SUA LC 2202W and out of a daughter of GAR New Design 5050. Her EPDs were BW 0.5, WW 55, YW 100, and Milk 18. She will have a late March calf by Sua Legend U8404.

LaVern Koupal purchased Lot 40 at $2,900. She was a February 2008 daughter of BA Initiative 607, and bred back to SUA LC2202 W for a late March calf. This cow had ratioed 111 on her first calf.

Mathew Luepke also bought Lot 34 at $2,800. She was BA Lady Focus 838, a March 2008 daughter of Mytty In Focus, and out of a daughter of Koupals B&B Focus 1011.

This was an excellent set of females that were met with excellent demand. A good sale for Steve and his crew! Watch for his spring bull sale, probably in May 2012.
