Branding recipes from Wyoming rancher
for Tri-State Livestock News
Editor’s note: With this poem and these recipes from Wheatland, Wyoming rancher Clara Powers, we include photos of moms at branding time submitted by readers. Maybe some dads will want to try their hand at these recipes. They would work for a Mother’s Day dinner in addition to a branding meal!
It’s that time of year
Babies are born
Spring is finally here
Grass is beginning to green
Trees leaf out
What a beautiful scene
The cows and calves look great
Gather them up
There’s lots on our plate.
The irons are in the pot
Heat them up
We need to have them hot.
Sharpen your knife and grab a pail
Rocky Mtn time
Oysters for supper is the yell.
Boots ‘n saddles, ropes and tack
Horses are ready
Ropers and wrestlers all are back.
Neighbors sharing this work day
Lots to do
But there’s still time to play
Now its over and off to our meal
Cowboys eat that beef with zeal.
Mary Irvine’s Branding Dump Cake
Can be made in 9×13 or sheet cake pan
1 can cherry pie filling
1 chocolate cake mix
(I use my mixer so the cherries break up.)
The frosting makes the cake.
Boil 1 minute:
5 T butter
1 C sugar
1/2 C milk
Add one cup small chocolate chips. Heat ‘til melted. Pour over cake
6 cans corn or 3 large pkgs frozen corn
2 (8 oz.) pkgs cream cheese
2 sticks butter
1 small jar Jalapeno relish
1 pkg cheddar cheese powder
Mix cream cheese and butter, add other ingredients. Use a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours or high for 3 hours.
6-8 Granny Smith apples chopped
1 pkg fun size snickers cut up
Mix 1 C. milk and 1 pkg French vanilla pudding
Add pudding mixture and 1 8 oz. carton whipped topping to the apples and snickers.
Steaks ‘n Gravy
Enough 6 oz steaks (any cut) for size of group
Flour steaks and brown in hot grease.
Put steaks in crock pot and make a brown gravy in the browning pan, adding Johnny sauce and Montreal steak flavoring.
I cook in my crock pot for about 4 hours.
Serve with mashed potatoes.
