Steve and April Brooks and the rest of the crew at Brooks Chalky Butte Angus brought a great set of bulls to town for their annual production sale. The Bowman Auction Market has a huge seating area and it was hard to find a seat at the start of the sale.
The bulls came to town in great working condition and are sired by the top trait-leading sires in the Angus breed. The bulls were very well presented and in great sale condition. They were showing a little more flesh than in previous years, but were definitely not overfed for an April sale. The majority of the sale bulls were backed by generations of calving ease, with plenty of performance that was above average for weaning and yearling weights. They were fed for soundness and longevity and nearly half the offering would be suitable for use on first-calf heifers. The registered heifers were out of the replacement pen and should go on to make excellent brood cows.
The sale started off with a very large offering of top quality commercial replacement heifers sired by Brooks bulls. The heifers were from Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch and also consigned by many of the top bull buyers in past years sales. All of these heifers were replacement quality. The selling price varied somewhat depending on the age and amount of flesh the heifers were carrying. The top selling draft was a set draft of 71 head of black baldies from TP Ranch, Bowman, ND, for $1,350 each.
Topping the bull sale was lot 7, Brooks Answer 215, a 2/17/12 son of SAV Final Answer 0035 with EPDs of BW 1.2, WW 60, YW 116, Milk 26, selling to Jake Reed, Brooten, MN, for $9,500.
