Brooks Chalky Butte Angus Ranch is owned by Steve and April Brooks and their family and Ryan and Becky Brooks and their family. They hosted a big crowd for their annual production sale in Bowman, N.D. The weather was beautiful, and the snow was melting after several areas having gotten quite a lot of snow during the previous week.

I felt that this was an outstanding set of bulls, and they really showed well on sale day. Approximately 70 percent of these bulls could be used on heifers, and they were in high demand all day long.

The Brooks herd has been bred to produce the Angus cow, an animal that is very maternal, with a great udder and a lot of body. This was evidenced by the great set of mature females they sold in their December sale. This herd also produces some of the strongest carcass traits that you see.

Many repeat buyers were on hand to compete on the top end of these bulls. The Brooks’ also sold several of their top customers’ commercial heifer calves on this sale.

Top selling bull of the day honors were shared by two bulls – Lot 16 and Lot 28, selling for $9,000 each.

Lot 28 was Brooks Consensus 3494, and he sold to DeGrand Angus, Baker, Mont. He was a son of Connealy Consensus 7229 and out of a daughter of Brooks Retail Product 549. He weaned at 652 lb. to ratio 111 and had a yearling weight of 1324 lb. to ratio 111. Gaining 4.20 lb. a day to ratio 112, he had a 37.3 cm. scrotal measurement to go with a 16.4 sq. in. rib eye area. His EPDs were BW 4.6, WW 58, MILK 31, and YW 102.

The Lot 16 bull sold to long time repeat buyer, the L Double Bar Ranch, Rhame, N.D. This son of B/R New Day 454 was out of a daughter of Sitz Upward 307R. With EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 61, MILK 34, and YW 112, he had an IMF ratio of 131. He had a weaning weight of 645 lb. to ratio 110 and a yearling weight of 1306 lb. to ratio 110. He had a large rib eye of 17.0 sq. in.

Gary and Ardis Tescher, Sidney, Mont., chose Lot 21 at $8,750. This was a son of Connealy Stimulus 8419 and out of a daughter of Mytty In Focus. Born at 92 lb., he weaned at 715 lb. and had a yearling weight of 1352 lb. to ratio 114. He had a 42.8 cm. scrotal measurement and a 14.4 sq. in. rib eye.

Lot 13 sold for $8,000 to Travis Anderson, Warwick, N.D. Sired by B/R New Day 454, he was out of a Mytty In Focus daughter. He had EPDs of CED 8.0, BW 0.7, WW 60, MILK 31, YW 109. He had gained 4.26 lb. a day on test.

Brian Goven, Mercer, N.D., bought Lots 15 and 47 at $7,750 each. Lot 15 was by B/R New Day 454 and Lot 47 was by Connealy Stimulus 8419.

This was a big day for the whole Brooks family. If you don’t know them, you haven’t met them yet, because they’re some of the nicest people in the business, and you will be friends.
