Cattlemen’s field day coming up
A Cattlemen’s field day will be held Sept. 11, 2010 in Miles City, MT. This is an educational event with opportunities to hear information to help the bottom line, participate in a panel discussion, walk through pens of cattle and visit with seedstock producers.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds in Miles City. Producers will have about 20 pens of purebred Hereford cattle on display. The agenda is as follows:
• Managing for functional efficiency – will include information about Dr. Jan Bonsma’s selection principles as well as pointers on raising beef cattle. Presented by John Merrill, a director of the Spade Ranches, an advisory director of the Swenson Land and Cattle Company, served as a director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the National Cattlemen’s Association and was director of the Texas Christian University Ranch Management program for 33 years.
• New meat cuts for the beef industry and taking back the beef industry – dealing with animal activists, presented by Charlene Rich, Executive Director, Montana Beef Council.
• Economics and control of cattle-worms in beef cattle: A northern plains perspective – presented by Dr. Mike Hildreth, South Dakota State University, Department of Veterinary Science and Biology and Microbiology.
• Water quality for eastern Montana – presented by Dr. Mark Petersen, Research Leader and Range Nutritionist, USDA-ARS Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory, Miles City, MT.
