Cheatgrass management workshop Sept. 28 in Wheatland

Cheatgrass management and a test herbicide demonstration plot are part of a workshop Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Wheatland, WY.

“Cheatgrass Management Strategies for Pasture and Rangelands” is 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Platte County office of the University of Wyoming (UW) Cooperative Extension Service, 57 Antelope Gap Rd.

“Cheatgrass is one of the most widespread weeds in the western United States, and it can negatively impact both livestock production and wildlife habitat,” said Brian Mealor, extension invasive weed specialist. “In this workshop, we will discuss the documented effectiveness of current management techniques and how to develop a strategy to fit specific situations. We will visit a field site to practice estimating the recovery potential of an infested site and initiate a herbicide demonstration plot, which can be revisited next year.”

Presenters are from UW extension and the Wyoming Weed and Pest Council. A $15 fee includes lunch, and preregistration by Friday, Sept. 23 is recommended. A map to the Platte County extension office is at http://mapq.st/mS18dH. For more information or to register, contact the Platte County Weed and Pest Control District in Wheatland at 307-322-3210 or Mealor at 307-766-3113 or bamealor@uwyo.edu.
