Colorado Versus the World showcases rodeo athletes at National Western
DENVER, Colo. – With three action-packed performances and contestants vying for $100,000, fans at the National Western Stock Show Colorado versus the World on Saturday got their money’s worth.
The second annual event started at the morning performance with contestants representing rodeos in Rapid City, SD, Austin, TX, Houston, TX, Calgary, AB, Dodge City, KS, Guymon, OK, Cheyenne, WY, Fort Worth, TX, San Angelo, TX, and North Platte, NE. Then the top four highest scored rides and fastest times from the World performance, advanced to Saturday night’s rodeo.
Saturday’s matinee featured the best from Colorado rodeos including the hosting National Western Stock Show, Estes Park, Colorado Springs, Loveland, Greeley, Pueblo and Elizabeth. Again the best four advanced. Saturday night saw four contestants from Colorado against four contestants from the World category which was then narrowed to the top two.
When it was all said and done in the bareback riding, it was a champion named Champion that won. Richmon Champion, from The Woodlands, TX, won representing the National Western and team Colorado. He had an 87-point effort that earned him a $10,000 check.
In steer wrestling, it was Luke Branquinho, also representing the National Western that had the fastest time at 4.5 seconds. Saddle bronc rider Tate Owens was born and raised in Colorado, but found himself on the World Team for the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo. Owens earned the championship with an 88 point ride. Also representing Fort Worth was Trevor Kastner from Ardmore, OK, who won the bull riding with an 88-point effort.
The barrel racing saw Mary Walker make another clean sweep. Walker, from Ennis, TX, was on the World team for Cheyenne Frontier Days. She won the morning performance, the eight-man round and the finals. Her fastest time of the day was at the morning performance with a 15.09. She won the next round with a 15.27 and the finals with a 15.23. The final round was a winner take all $10,000 paycheck in each event. Walker was the big money winner of the day with a total of 12,400.
