Cowboy Mounted Shoot results from South Dakota State Fair

For the third year in a row, the Dakota Territory Mounted Shooters from Lennox, SD, along with the Dakota Running Irons from Pukwana, SD, hosted a Cowboy Mounted Shoot at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron on Friday, Sept. 2.

There were 21 competitors at this exciting match sponsored by the above mentioned clubs and the South Dakota Wheat Growers Association. Hundreds of fans filled the stands during the event. Cowboys in period correct or western garb ran a variety of barrel/pole courses on their horses while shooting balloons with their .45 handguns and rifles. The guns are loaded with specifically designed “blanks” (loaded by an armor) created just for this type of event. No projectiles are used, it is the black powder blast that pops the balloons if the shooter is within 15 feet or so of the target.

These skilled horsemen and beautiful horses put on quite a show of skills and thrills at the afternoon event. Like many other rodeo style events, families are able to participate together – husbands and wives, sons and daughters all competed during the event. The winners were:

Men’s division: 1. Craig Shryock, Wessington Springs, SD, 77.525; 2. Brett Borkowski, Wessington Springs, SD, 78.898; 3. Tucker Ashley, Pukwana, SD, 83.192.

Women’s division: 1. Kelli Shryock, Wessington Springs, SD, 86.181; 2. Stacey Brouwer, Hartford, SD, 94.580; 3. Kari Feldhaus, Britton, SD, 118.027.

Wrangler (child): 1. Katelin Deneke, 130.069.

Kelli and Craig Shryock of Wessington Springs, SD, took home the overall prizes of gift cards sponsored by Double D Western Store.

Following the handgun stage was the rifle division. The winners were:

Rifle: 1. Tucker Ashley, Pukwana, SD; 2. Brett Borkowski, Wessington Springs, SD.

This event is open and free to spectators, and interested parties may participate if they have an interest in trying their hand and horse. For more information and directions, call 605-647-2830.
