Crew Crop Insurance Agency wins 2012 Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo competition
On Jan. 31, the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rapid City, SD was filled to the brim with rodeo enthusiasts cheering for their favorite ranch rodeo team. Fans had a plethora of contenders to choose from. This year’s event hosted 240 cowboys on 60 different teams, making it the largest turn-out in event history.
The Black Hills Stock Show (BHSS) preliminary round took place earlier that morning, and consisted of three-different events: steer loading, range doctoring and stray gathering. The top 10 scoring teams moved on to the Finals. A Calcutta was held just prior to the final round.
The final round had five compulsory events: Titan trailer relay; rope-mug-and-tie; wild cow milking; double mugging; and Crown Royal ranch bronc ride.
“This is probably the largest crowd we’ve ever had. I figure if we put the cowboys in the arena, they will draw the crowd, and they sure did tonight,” said Kevin Schmidt, ranch rodeo event director.
Defending champions from the 2011 BHSS were the Crew Crop Insurance team number two from Phillip, SD. The team entered the event knowing the odds of repeating their feat were highly unlikely. The team consisted of: Captain Colton McDaniel; Tucker McDaniel; Jeff Nelson and Jake Nelson.
A gut-wrenching scare loomed over the crowd as Tucker McDaniel suffered a rough, bronc ride dismount and had to be rushed to the hospital for further examining.
“Tucker is good. He just told us so,” said Colton McDaniel, after the announcement of the team’s victory Tuesday night.
The team not only won the overall title but also walked away with a win in Crown Royal ranch bronc ride and wild cow milking.
“I can’t really say much more than that. It’s a little unusual, I suppose, to come back and win, but I absolutely am not going to brag about it,” Colton McDaniel said.
Second place overall team and winners of the rope-mug-and-tie and double muggin’ was First National Bank team, also of Phillip, SD.
The Live! with Jim Thompson team came in third and won the Titan trailer relay.
All interested cowboys and cowgirls are encouraged to register for their place in next year’s BHSS Ranch Rodeo competition.
