CRP survey information important for SD producers

Next month, as producers receive survey forms concerning the use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands, a South Dakota State University economist reminds producers their answers are important and confidential.

SDSU Economist Gary Taylor said since producers have many options on CRP acres coming up for renewal, finding out about producers’ plans is crucial.

“We’re just trying to find out what they are most likely to do so we can determine what the economic impact will be on the state,” he said. “Because over the next three or four years, we will have several hundred thousand acres of land that will be eligible to either be re-enrolled in the program or to be put back into crop production.”

The CRP survey will be mailed to producers around the state starting Sept. 5. Taylor said final publication of the survey results should be made public after Jan. 1, 2008.

The survey seeks input from producers on six different areas including enrollment factors, re-enrollment considerations, future land uses, and management issues. The survey is a being conducted as a cooperative effort between SDSU, the South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, and the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council.

Producers who take part in the survey need not worry about issues of confidentiality, Taylor said. “We want to make sure that people know we’re not going to use this information directly; everything is confidential,” he said. “There will be statewide publications as to the results but certainly nothing that is going to risk anyone’s confidential data being revealed.”

As producers complete the survey they can seek assistance for questions with SDSU specialists, or they can contact SDSU Research Compliance Coordinator Norm Braaten. His phone number is (605) 688-6975 and he can be reached through e-mail at
