Dahl dead of apparent suicide

Flint Dahl, a Fort Pierre, S.D. man is dead after being found hanging by a bed sheet in his jail cell last week. Dahl was convicted of stealing and abusing barrel horse "Dually," owned by Wendy Halweg Bechen, from the Stanley County fairgrounds the night of the Fourth of July in 2009. On April 15, 2014 he appeared in Hughes County court, where he was accused of driving and boating under the influence, and a felony drug charge. The new charges were a violation of his probation from the 2009 crimes, and he was ordered back to jail. He was scheduled for sentencing for the probation violation and the new charges April 29. He was found hanging in his jail cell April 28 at 2:15 p.m. Authorities say lifesaving attempts, including CPR, were made immediately and he was transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls in critical condition.

Hughes County sheriff Mike Leidholt says 27-year-old Flint Dahl passed away Thursday, May 1 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, but his death is still under investigation.

Dually spent nearly two years in recovery and rehabilitation, but has been back in competition, winning the South Dakota Rodeo Association Finals in 2012. F
