Deadwood’s Days of ’76 to host rodeo’s best July 26-30

A record-breaking 771 of the nation’s best cowboys and cowgirls will be among the PRCA competitors who will converge on Deadwood for the Days of ‘76 Rodeo July 26-30. The award-winning event, now in its 94th year, boasts a $200,000 purse and attracts the top Professional Rodeo Cowboy and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association talent from across the country.

The Days of ‘76 Rodeo remains a favorite stop on the professional rodeo circuit. The Deadwood event won the PRCA Small Rodeo of the Year Award from 1998-2001, and has taken home PRCA Medium Rodeo of the Year honors each year since 2004. The Days of ‘76 committee was inducted into the PRCA Hall of Fame in 2011. These awards, voted on by the cowboys and cowgirls who compete, help bring the nation’s best to Deadwood.

Highlighting this year’s contestants will be 18 of the top 20 bull riders in the current PRCA world standings, including 2014 and 2015 world champion, and current leader, Sage Kimzey of Oklahoma. Joining Kimzey are the best of the best, including South Dakota’s Ardie Maier and Wyoming’s Bobby Welsh.

The Days of ‘76 Rodeo kicks-off at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, with PRCA steer roping, featuring all of the top 20 steer ropers in current world standings. This will include current world standing leader J. Tom Fisher and many past world champions including Rocky Patterson, Scott Snedecor, Bryce Davis and Guy Allen. Based in Santa Ana, Texas, Allen has won Deadwood’s Days of ‘76 three times and will be joined this year by more than 90 other steer ropers, including tri-state area ropers Ora Taton, Coy Thompson, Jesse Tierney, Paul Tierney and many other top Badlands Circuit ropers.

Slack begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 and will feature 10 of the top 20 PRCA cowboys in steer wrestling, 12 of the top 20 cowboys in tie-down roping and 11 of the top 20 team roping teams. Steer wrestlers include Texan Matt Reeves and Highmore, S.D.’s Jake Rinehart.

Team ropers will be led by the current No. 1 team in the world – Luke Brown and Jake Long. All of the timed-event cowboys will compete again either in the July 27, 8 a.m. slack or the July 28, 29 or 30 Days of ‘76 rodeo performances. In tie-down roping, the 2nd ranked team in the world Marcus Costa will compete in Deadwood, along with 3rd ranked Timber Moore. Last year’s world champion Caleb Smidt.

In saddle bronc riding — Deadwood’s Days of ‘76 premiere event — 15 of the top 20 cowboys are entered, including 2015 world champion and current world leader Jacobs Crawley and all of Utah’s Wright family of bronc riders. South Dakota’s Cole and JJ Elshere, Cody Taton, Troy Crowser, Jesse Bail and others will also compete.

In barrel racing, 16 of the top 20 racers will race in Deadwood, including top-ranked Mary Burger of Oklahoma and 6th ranked Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D. There are 125 barrel racers entered in the Days of ’76 this year.

Virtually all of the top Badlands Circuit cowboys and cowgirls are also signed on to compete in Deadwood in order to qualify for the Circuit Finals, which will be held in October in Minot, N.D.

Riding event cowboys at this year’s Days of ‘76 Rodeo will compete on Burch rodeo horses and bulls, well-known throughout the area for toughness and ability to buck. Burch will be joined by Sutton Rodeos, Brookman-Highland Rodeo Company and Terry Walls Rodeo. Many time PRCA award-winning clown and barrelman Keith Isley will perform in Deadwood again this year.
