Debbie Stabenow to head Senate Agriculture Committee

Michigan Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow will become chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry during the next Congress. She succeeds Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) who was defeated in the midterm election. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) was next in line to be chairman, but he chose to remain as head of the Senate Budget Committee.

Stabenow has served on agriculture committees in the Michigan legislature, U.S. House, and currently the U.S. Senate. She will lead the Senate Committee through negotiations for the 2012 farm bill, which observers believe will be a battleground over farm subsidies, among other issues.
