Dutch oven cooking events planned through summer months
It’s that time of year again – time to start planning outdoor cooking adventures! There will be several Dutch oven cooking events coming. Here’s a few:
• June 4-5: A Chuck Wagon Cook Off will be held at the Fort Sisseton Historical Festival this year. Come watch the wagons cook and compete the “old-fashion” way in their Dutch ovens over hot coals, serving up chuck cowboy style. This will be a new addition to an already amazing and entertaining family event. Fort Sisseton State Park is located in Lake City, SD. See life as it was in 1864 when the fort was established. Popular features are cavalry drills, military costume ball, chuck wagon, muzzle-loader shoot, rendezvous, living history demonstrations, fiddlers, melodramas, food vendors, ranch rodeo and arts and crafts. To learn more, call 605-448-5474, or e-mail: FortSisseton@state.sd.us.
• June 11-12: The Outdoor Expo in Huron, SD, will again host a Dutch Oven Cook Off on Saturday as well as a Wild Game Competition. The Wild Game event will accept entries made at home, such as casseroles, dried meats and canned products. Both events are open to the public to compete in. There will also be the first ever South Dakota State Dutch Oven Gathering on Sunday with Dutch Oven cooks from across the state cooking, and enjoying good food and good friends.
