Emergency USDA funding available to battle western grasshoppers

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced last week that nearly $11 million in USDA emergency funding will be provided to battle costly grasshopper outbreaks in western rangeland states, where the number of hoppers is predicted to be the largest in years. The hoppers, which devour rangeland grass, have been hatching in recent weeks, according to the Associated Press. Several Wyoming counties have already begun aerial spraying programs.

USDA said it’s also ready to provide assistance to ranchers and farmers who suffer eligible, documented losses caused by hopper infestations. For more information, contact the nearest county office of the Farm Service Agency.
