Eugene J. Strouth

Eugene “Gene” Strouth, age 92, long-time rancher of Strandburg, SD, formerly of Fulda, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD.

Eugene Joseph Strouth was born on Nov. 7, 1919 to C.M. and Susan (Seivert) Strouth in Ashton, IA. He was raised there and graduated from Ashton High School. Following his education he farmed until he enlisted into the U.S. Marines on Aug. 12, 1944. Gene served his country during WWII and was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946.

He returned home and was united in marriage to Phyllis Rosenberg in Avoca, MN. They made their home near Fulda, MN, where he farmed and raised cattle. In 1959, they moved to their ranch near Strandburg, SD, where they have remained for 52 years.



In the early 1970s Gene received the award for Deuel County Grassland Management. Gene entered the Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD on Nov. 7, 2011 and passed away there on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at the age of 92.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, SD. Besides his love of the land he enjoyed watching his grandsons play basketball and baseball. Gene’s love and passion for ranching always had him trying to teach the grandsons how to become ranchers.



Gene is lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis Strouth, Strandburg, SD; daughter, Connie Winter, Slayton, MN; three grandsons: Patrick (Mary Jo) Winter, Blaine, MN, Trevor (Heidi) Winter, Lakeville, MN and Brennan Winter, Minneapolis, MN; four great-grandchildren: Erica, Pierce, Macy and Nolan Winter; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Dr. Keith Winter; one brother, Robert Strouth, and two sisters, Evelyn Lee and Bernice Speltz.
