Fewer farms in the Dakotas

North Dakota

North Dakota’s number of farms and ranches declined during 2014, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The number of farms and ranches in the State, at 30,300, was down 500 farms from 2013. Numbers of farms and ranches in North Dakota with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales declined 1,100 farms from the year earlier while operations with more than $100,000 were up 600 farms from 2013.

Land in farms and ranches in North Dakota totaled 39.3 million acres, unchanged from 2013. The average size of operation, at 1,297 acres, was up 21 acres from the year earlier.



South Dakota

South Dakota’s number of farms and ranches declined during 2014, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The number of farms and ranches in the State, at 31,700, was down 300 farms from 2013. Numbers of farms and ranches in South Dakota with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales declined 400 farms from the year earlier while operations with more than $100,000 were up 100 farms from 2013.



Land in farms and ranches in South Dakota totaled 43.3 million acres, unchanged from 2013. The average size of operation, at 1,366 acres, was up 13 acres from the year earlier.
