Final imports, BSE rule posted
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service published a final rule to amend regulations for animals and animal products with regard to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The rule goes into effect March 4.
The rule describes a new system for classifying regions in other countries as having negligible, controlled or undetermined risk for BSE. The final rule also revises the conditions for the importation of bovine products and removes restrictions on the importation of cervids and camelids, and products derived from such animals.
The new BSE regulations also prescribe the conditions under which certain commodities may be imported into the United States from regions that have been designated as having negligible, controlled of undetermined risk for the disease.
The importation of sheep and goats will be dealt with in a separate regulation. F
