First annual Newell Ranch Rodeo a success

Jan Swan Wood

The Newell Centennial celebration over the Labor Day weekend was home to the first annual Newell Ranch Rodeo. Held on Saturday, Sept. 4, it was a tough, fun competition involving eight teams from the surrounding area.

Events were Mutton Bustin’, Sorting/Penning/Doctoring, Branding, Trailer Loading, and Sheep TeePeeing. Each team had to have four team members plus a mutton buster. Team members had to include one woman and one youth as well. Some teams had several of each.

The cattle were mixed lots of roping cattle, yearlings and longhorn cow-calf pairs. None of them wanted to be at the ranch rodeo, so cooperation was minimal from the livestock. The riders and horses made the best of it though, and the challenging stock made for very exciting action for the spectators.

Final team placings:

1. Ward Wrestlers: Tom Ward, Vern Ward, Fehrin Ward, KeAnna Ward and Mataya Ward.

2. Simanton Boys: Dale Simanton, Jessy Carlson, Jodi Donahey, Taylor Tupper and Cactus Carlson.

3. Gumbo Ridge Riders: Robert Boylan, Jim Smeenk, Sara Smeenk, Wacey Boylan and Kurtis Mooney.
