First Dutch oven cook-off a Success at Fort Sisseton Festival

FORT SISSETON HISTORIC STATE PARK, SD – The Fort Sisseton Historical Festival featured the inaugural Dutch oven cook-off on Friday, June 4th. The competition included 14 teams which prepared 18 dishes in three categories – main dish, dessert and vegetable.

“We had a great variety of dishes that really impressed the judges and had a great time,” said park manager Katie Ceroll. “A big thank you to our cook-off main course product sponsors, the North Central Cattlemen’s Association.”

Winners of the Main Dish entries were: 1. Roger Pilsner; 2. Caleb Swanson; 3. Clell Swanson.



Dessert winners include: 1. Amy Kruse; 2. Joe Klein and Erin Peterson; 3. Jessica Kott.

Vegetable winners: 1. Kevin Finck; 2. Jim Patrick.



The 2010 festival was well attended. “We estimate approximately 12,000 visitors over the three-day event,” said Ceroll.

The Fort Sisseton Historical Festival is held annually during the first weekend of June. The festival is one of many special events held throughout the year including, the Fort’s Anniversary Celebration in August and the Frontier Christmas in December. The Fort also hosts Northern State University’s summer theater productions on weekends in July.
