Four South Dakota Producers Serve on Cattlemen’s Beef Board Leadership Team

South Dakota continued to provide strong leadership to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) at the 2016 Cattle Industry Winter Convention in San Diego, California (January 26-30, 2016). Four South Dakota beef producers serve on the board appointed by the Secretary of Ag through nominating organizations. The Beef Board is responsible for approving the annual budget for its national checkoff-funded programs. Board members are established according to the number of cattle in the state or region; 500,000 head for the first board member and 1,000,000 head for each additional member.

New appointees, South Dakota Beef Industry Council vice president Eric Sumption, a rancher from Frederick, SD and Tammy Basel, a rancher from Union Center, SD, join Vaughn Meyer, a Reva, SD rancher and Gary Sharp, a dairy and beef producer from Bath, SD as CBB Directors. Meyer and Sharp are serving their 2nd term as CBB directors and continue to represent South Dakota through CBB committee work. Sharp serves on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. The 20-member committee is responsible for approving projects and funding for the state and national Beef Checkoff Programs. Sharp also serves on the CBB’s Audit and Export Growth Committees. Meyer serves on the CBB Nutrition and Health Committee. This committee focuses on beef nutrition and health research and communication, including how we might improve and share beef’s nutrition and health benefits with beef community stakeholders, consumers and influencers.

“South Dakota producers continue to have great representation on the Beef Board”, says Suzy Geppert, executive director of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC), the organization that collects and administers the $1 beef checkoff on cattle sold in South Dakota. “We sincerely appreciate the time and dedication these individuals put forth in providing a ‘check and balance’ system that ensures every voice is heard, creating a stronger and more viable industry.”
