FSIS issues guidance on GMO 'negative claims' labels
The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service on Friday issued guidance on how companies can claim on food labels that bioengineered or genetically modified ingredients or animal feed were not used in the production of meat, poultry, or egg products.
The guidance notes that FSIS has not allowed the use of the terms "genetically modified organism" or "GMO" in negative claims, but following the recent enactment of the biotech labeling law will allow the use of those terms "provided that the label or labeling is otherwise truthful and not misleading."
