Gelbviehs, Balancers from the region shine at NWSS

The Junior Gelbvieh and Balancer® Female Show at the National Western Stock Show was held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Denver, Colo. Brad McCurry of Sedgwick, Kan., evaluated the 33 Gelbvieh and 31 Balancer heifers.

Tanner Aherin of Phillipsburg, Kan., exhibited the grand champion Gelbvieh female. BAG Miss Passion 30Z is a Feb. 18, 2012 daughter of BEA Passion 001X ET.

Anna Duxbury of Wessington, S.D., exhibited the reserve champion Gelbvieh female. GDX 312A is a Feb. 27, 2013 daughter of PLA Big Dog 101Y.

The grand champion Balancer female was exhibited by Dustin Aherin, Phillipsburg, Kan. AHL Empress is a Dec. 29, 2011 daughter of XXB Wingman 639T ET.

Anna Duxbury had double the luck on show day as she also exhibited the reserve champion Balancer female. GDX 202Z is a Feb. 1, 2012 daughter of LCC New Standard.

The reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls was exhibited by Warner Beef Genetics, Beaver City, Neb. Their pen of January- and February-born bulls weighed 1,128 pounds posting a weight per day of age of 3.33 pounds per day. The three bulls combined for the following ultrasound data: 14.94 ribeye area, 3.29 %IMF, and 0.26 back fat.

In the Balancer pen show, Judd Ranch of Pomona, Kansas, were named champion pen of three Balancer bulls. These January-born bulls had an average weight of 1,242 with a 3.54 weight per day of age on show day. Their average actual ultrasound data was as follows: 16.73 ribeye, 3.57 %IMF, and 0.57 back fat.
