GFP to release 6,500 trout below Oahe Dam
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) will stock approximately 6,500 rainbow trout below Oahe Dam later this month, weather permitting.
The first stocking of approximately 3,250 rainbow trout will be March 23, with the remaining 3,250 released on April 6, in the marina area below the Oahe Dam.
The rainbow trout range between nine and 12 inches in length and bite readily; providing quality opportunities for anglers of all ages; whether fishing by boat or shore.
GFP crews from McNenney State Fish Hatchery west of Spearfish will stock Shasta strain rainbow trout. Past research has demonstrated that this particular strain of rainbow trout return to the angler creel at a higher rate than other strains of rainbow trout.
GFP crews will insert transmitters in 20 rainbow trout to track movements and learn how to improve stocking strategies to benefit anglers.
