Horse judge training session Oct. 5-6
The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host a training session for horse judges Oct. 5-6.
The session takes place at the Animal Science Building at South Dakota State University. Events begin with a 7-10 p.m. Oct. 5 optional session that covers mechanics, ethics, and the scoring system. The Oct. 6 seminar begins at 7:30 a.m. and continues through the day, with a written exam at 6 p.m.
The seminar will cover the classes featured at the State 4-H Horse Show, the Danish system, and the 4-H philosophy. The seminar is open to all and costs $10 for spectators and $30 for those who seek certification. Certified judge candidates also must complete a questionnaire.
Requirements for certification include attendance to the seminar, successful completion of the judging portion of the training, and a score of 80 percent or higher on the written portion of the seminar.
Jon Wolf will be the instructor for the session; he has 31 years of teaching experience and holds numerous judging cards with professional equine associations.
